Home > Travel > Wild Tanzania and Lazy Lagoon
This trip takes you to a part of Africa that is unaltered, seemingly untouched, with plenty of game as far as the eye can see, and then you pretty much have it to yourself! It is not without reason that some call the southern national parks the secret of Tanzania. This trip combines wild safari experiences in the Nyerere National Park (former Selous Game Reserve) and Ruaha National Park with relaxation by the tropical and warm Indian Ocean on an island where the name indicates what is in store: Lazy Lagoon. It is a trip where you will not experience crowds of tourists like you do at the more visited destinations. Much more silence and space to just be yourself.
You fly from Denmark (or enquire rates from antoher country) to Dar es Salaam. There are no direct flights, so there will be a change of flight along the way. We will find the connection that suits you best.
When you land in Dar es Salaam, you will be met at the airport by our representative, who will be holding a sign with your name on it. You will then be accompanied to the domestic terminal from where you will fly onwards into the bush on a smaller plane. It's an exciting way to see the landscape from above, and just 40 minutes later you land in the middle of Nyerere National Park (formerly: Selous Game Reserve). It is also possible to drive from Dar es Salaam to Rufiji River Camp, but it is a drive of roughly 6 hours. With its size of approximately 50,000 square kilometers, Nyerere National Park is nothing less than the largest nature reserve in Africa. In 1982, Selous was awarded UNESCO World Natural Heritage status for its diversity and untouched nature. From the plane it can be seen that the landscape is mainly flat and covered with miombo forest, and that the extensive water system around the Rufiji River dominates the landscape with its canals, small islands and wide lakes. On the sandy airstrip, your guide will be waiting - excited to greet you and drive you to Rufiji River Camp.
Rufiji River Camp is a small, intimate camp with just 11 tents, all situated magnificently along the river bank. They are spacious, with ensuite bathrooms, and each has a large veranda with fantastic views. Being on safari is a wonderful gift of impressions, while all your senses are activated. Hearing lions roar out there in the dark from your tent gives anyone a little kick of adrenaline. Seeing herds of elephants bathing and drinking along the river moves most people. The evening background sound of cicadas, frogs, bats and grasshoppers quickly becomes a soothing constant. The hippos can be heard grunting in the shallows before dusk, when they leave the river and head for the banks or further inland to graze through the night. The African sunset is unique, it seems bigger, closer and sinks much faster over the horizon here at the equator. Enjoy a sundowner by the cracking fire, with the starry sky as a ceiling. Soon dinner iis ready and you will be invited to the table.
Selous is known for having the largest population of the rare and endangered African wild dog, which along with lion and leopard are the primary predators in the national park. There is plenty of prey: buffalo, wildebeest and the smaller warthogs and impalas. In addition to a gamedrive in an open 4x4 vehicle car, there is the option of a boat safari and guided bush walks.
An early morning safari, either in a 4x4 jeep or on foot depending on your preference, gives you the last impressions of the Selous. Another hearty, full English breakfast awaits you at the camp, and then it's time to say goodbye to the friendly staff who have taken care of you. The guide drives you to the airstrip, and shortly after you take off and fly west towards Ruaha National Park, located in central Tanzania. The flight takes approximately one and a half hour, including a possible stop in Mikumi National Park if other safari guests are in transit. You land in Ruaha and will be met by your guide. It is not far to the Ruaha River Lodge, which consists of 24 large bandas built in stone from the river, and thatcheded with grass. The bandas are spread along the river, are spacious and comfortably furnished with en-suite bathrooms at the back, and a large veranda overlooking the river. The lodge has two restaurants - one down by the river bank and another high above the river.
The landscape is varied and there is plenty of game. The great Ruaha River is the only source of permanent water in the park so the game is often concentrated here. Kudu antelopes with their magnificent twisted horns and beautiful markings are found in the rocky bush area. Africa's largest antelope species, the Roan, is also seen in this area. Large herds of buffalo are preferred prey for the lions who live well and are therefore widely distributed with smaller territories. Cheetahs have perfect conditions on the open plains where they hunt smaller gazelles and antilopes.
The safari days have their rhythms, with early morning and late afternoon trips in the open 4x4 vehicles (with space for 7 guests in each). You drive off with your guide, and will be enriched by experiences and shared knowledge of the bush. The staff at the camp are flexible in organizing the day according to your wishes. It is possible to arrange your very own experiences if there is something special you want to celebrate. Let us know if there is anything you would like to have planned in advance.
After a nice breakfast at the lodge, it's time to say goodbye to the staff. You drive with your guide on the last safari for this visit. At noon you head for the small airstrip. Your guide has brought a lunch box for the trip, so you can have lunch before you take off and head for the coast. The plane stops in Mikumi and Selous respectively on the way to the coast. It is fantastic to fly over the national parks and see the landscape from above. In Bagamoyo you will be met by Lazy Lagoon's representative and a short sail will bring you out to the island. You arrive late in the afternoon and are welcomed to the island.
Tanzania is blessed with a coast to the warm tropical Indian Ocean. Lazy Lagoon is a small private island - 9 km long and without permanent residents, only inhabited by the staff, as well as some game: the small shy suni antelopes and duikers , monkeys, bush babies and genets.
If you like sailing, you can borrow a laser dinghy and go out and play with the wind a bit. Alternatively, you can take a kayak and explore the mangroves. You can snorkel on the coral reef and discover lots of tropical fish below the surface. Perhaps you want to fish with the local fishermen, or take a closer look at their sailing traditions. For some, a good book, a shady breeze and a cocktail made of fresh fruit are calling.
You decide the content of your days yourself. All cottages are private and with the most beautiful view to the east. Bathing, snorkelling, a boat trip, or exploring the mangrove forest facing the lagoon. The local fishermen head out of the bay early and out to sea in their traditional boats: ngalawas.
Depending on the time of your flight to Europe, you say goodbye to Lazy Lagoon and you sail to the mainland. You will be transferred to the airport in time for your onwards flight.
Depending on which airline you fly with, you land either in the morning or in the afternoon in Denmark and have had one or two stopovers along the way.
NOTE: due to the small planes in Tanzania, each traveler is only allowed to bring one check-in luggage of 15 kilos.
